Mervyn Gers grew up in a small village bordering The Kalahari in the Northern Cape, South Africa. He is inspired by the beauty, colours and textures of his childhood landscape.
A potter and ceramicist working from his studio in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, Mervyn produces mostly decorative pieces influenced by Oriental designs and glazes.
A Mervyn Gers original could have up to 20 layers of glaze and be fired a minimum of 5 times. In fact, his use of very thick glazes almost changes the piece from clay into glass. This technique is what makes his pieces so unique..
“I am fascinated with ceramics from the Far East, Japan, Korea and China. I especially love the Hagi, Shino and Celadon glazes.” Says Gers.
Mervyn has been doing pottery full time since 2006. He works on individual pieces for private collections and commissions. He is now adding colour glazes to his artworks as most of his current pieces are produced in a monochrome pallet using black, grey, white and cream.
Mostly self taught Mervyn Gers has persevered to perfect his glazing techniques, this is what makes his pieces one of a kind.
It’s all about what’s “ON THE SURFACE”
